The challenges of "impedance matching" and "balancing unbalanced signals" have long been present in both recording studios and live performances. Many people find themselves debating whether to use a DI box or even questioning the necessity of using one. However, most common electro-acoustic instruments output high-impedance signals, which are incompatible with mixing consoles. If connected directly, not only will signal clarity and high-frequency details be lost, but volume levels may also be negatively affected—ultimately doing more harm than good. Additionally, since most electro-acoustic devices output unbalanced signals, they are prone to interference during transmission, meaning performance can also be influenced by the distance between the instrument and the receiving equipment. Thus, DI boxes play an essential role in both recording and live sound environments.

In Everlasting Classics, the instruments used vary with the music genres, including various common types of electro-acoustic instruments. To address these issues, the production employed Rupert Neve RNDI DI boxes (both RNDI and RNDI-S) and Whirlwind DI boxes (Director and Di2) as part of the audio solution. Each brand’s DI units bring distinct characteristics to the table, allowing them to showcase their respective strengths throughout the show.

The RNDI excels in isolated circuits, featuring Neve's classic phase-coupled transformer. For high frequencies, an output impedance of less than 40Ω at the output is crucial—this design minimizes high-frequency loss during long-distance transmission. In the program, for songs pursuing a "warm analog sound," the Neve-designed coupling transformer's characteristics in second and third harmonics fully meet the requirements.

Generally speaking, the signal output by an instrument (electric bass) is transmitted to a DI box, which then distributes the signal. One channel of the output signal is sent directly to the mixing console, while the other is sent to the electric bass amplifier head through a parallel output port. A large-diaphragm microphone then picks up the sound from the bass speaker cabinet. Finally, these two channels of signals are sent to the mixing console, where the sound engineer mixes and processes the two different styles of sound signals to achieve a more satisfying sound. The entire system's workflow is smooth and simple, with extremely high safety, delivering high-quality sound to the audience.
